A – Ever since childhood, I’ve written. A high school teacher took notice of my writing and urged me to enter contests. I don’t have specialized training or college courses for writing, but this teacher noticed my gift . With that encouragement, I managed to get two poems published before the end of high school. I feel the best writing comes directly from the heart. The best books, movies, and speeches come from personal experiences – and, although it may be painful, it can help others.
Medications vary for depression and crazy. It can be Lithium, the oldest and well known medication. It is known as a mood stabilizer. Another one is Topamax. It is an anticonvulsant drug. It is new and will help control the ups and downs of bipolar. There are many out there. Talk to your psychiatrist; work out the plan that best suits you.
This feeling is something that you definitely can and will get over. It will require some effort, some help, and some adjustments to your thinking, and most of all some time. Remember that even though you may be upset that your boyfriend dumped you, doesn’t mean that your life will stop. Remember that life goes on and you need to be prepared.
Our family was sitting toward the back of the crowd, but we kids didn’t mind. We were ready to eat, not hear someone talk about his brother, no matter how famous they both were. The microphones carried the voices of the people in front, though, and we heard someone ask the famous man to make his speech.
Who is sexier, the confident guy with the shaved, bald head or the one with bad posture and a comb-over? Which of these two guys has chosen to own his dwindling hair follicles and which one is ashamed? Denying your illness is a form of psychic comb-over. It says “if I pretend my heart/kidneys/bones are fine, then everything will be OK”. Believe me, no one is fooled. Least of all, you.
Drugs and alcohol may only be a small concern. They may partake of illegal drugs or alcohol, but it is in more of a social way and there’s no obvious evidence of it as being a problem.
But that’s not what I’m talking about. The kind of depression I’m talking about is a physical disease that happens to profoundly affect out emotions. It also usually winds up giving physical symptoms, such as headaches, insomnia, digestive troubles and skin problems.
Is your helping necessary? There are times when “helping” prevents your child from taking responsibility and growing into what he/she “should” be doing. There are also times when “helping” is truly necessary. You have to weigh the positive against the negative benefits of stepping in. You also have to take into consideration what your child truly cannot do for himself/herself due to the mental illness. This is an important determination and needs to take all aspects into consideration and may require you to accept less than perfect behavior and/or do more than you would if your child were mentally healthy.
